India-Italy

Project type

Bilateral Relations

Date

Dec 2023

The #Melodi has taken over the internet since forever now and there cannot be a better time to discuss the India-Italy relations.
The ties between India and Italy date back to the Roman Empire. India and Italy have shared not only economic but cultural views too. From 1843 to 1858, Gaspare Gorresio, an Italian scholar, translated the Ramayan into Italian and created the first chair of Sanskrit in Italy.
Indian trade with Italy has prevailed for over 2000 years. But in 2012, when two Italian marines aboard an oil tanker shot and killed two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala, the relationship went through a rough patch.
Today, both countries share a great friendship and bond. The major exports to Italy include iron and steel, and ready-made garments amongst others. With India being Italy’s second-largest South Asian trading partner, the bilateral trade is valued at around 14 million US dollars.
After last year’s visit to Italy by the External affairs minister, Mr. Jaishankar, potential partnerships in agro-tech, innovation, and space have been discussed. They signed the Mobility and Migration
Partnership Agreement to facilitate easy movement of workers, students and professionals.
With a population of around 1,80,000, the Indian diaspora in Italy is the third-largest in Europe and the agreement will be beneficial for both.
India also renewed its MoU with Italy in the defence sector and moreover, the political relations after 2017 have deepened for the two nations and we wish the countries to share more prosperous bilateral relations in the future.
